◆Know more
Lee Jae-myung (李在明) is the current president of South Korea. Born into a poor family, he had a difficult childhood which forced him to skip middle school and work in factories, where a workplace accident caused a permanent injury. Despite these hardships, he completed high school and earned a full scholarship to study law. After graduating, he worked as a human rights lawyer for nearly two decades before entering politics in 2005.
As a local mayor and later governor, he gained recognition for his bold reforms and welfare programmes. Although he narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election, he quickly became his party's leader and launched a second campaign. His eventual victory was seen as both a product of the political upheaval in late 2024 and loyal support from working-class voters. His rise from poverty to the presidency is inspirational.
