Deepfake techonology allows users to create realistic-looking videos where someone appears to be someone else.
Deepfake video and audio were weaponized to smear the opposite political camp by each side during the the 2024 US presidential election.
The use of artificial intelligence(AI) makes our life become convenient and improves our living standards, but ibut it also creates many pitfalls and can be used by lawbreakers to commit crimes.
"Deepfake" is the combination of "Deep learning" and "Fake". It utilizes deep learning techniques trained on vast amounts of data, including facial images, voices, and videos. This data is used to learn the characteristics, movements, and sounds of different individuals. AI technology is then employed to create fake content, including fake images, voices, and videos, thus enabling functions like AI face swapping and voice cloning.
AI Face Swapping
Technology that uses artificial intelligence to replace one person's face in a video or image with another person's face. This allows users to create realistic-looking videos where someone appears to be someone else.
Voice cloning
Using AI to replicate voices, the cloned voice would sound like the original speaker's tempo, pitch, accent, and style.
Example of deepfake
During the 2024 US presidential election, fake phone calls that imitates the voice of Joe Biden were made to dissuade people from voting for him.
How to spot deepfake
Apart from getting verification from the authorities about whether the video is true, there are other common methods to spot foul play:
˙Strange movements: Look for weird lip syncing, odd blinking, or unusual head motions
˙Blurry areas: Check for fuzzy edges around the face or strange marks that show the video might be fake
˙Weird actions: Notice if the person acts strangely, shows odd emotions, or reacts in an unusual way
