Bill： You are right. However, these autonomous cars are improving by driving more and more routes and encountering different conditions. The big data behind the system may enable them to make more accurate decisions than humans!

Automation levels of cars

SAE International has introduced a six-level system to indicate the degree of driving task automation a vehicle can perform. A higher level indicates a higher degree of autonomy by the car.

Autonomous car in Hong Kong

According to current laws in Hong Kong, an autonomous car is defined as a vehicle that can operate at SAE level 3 or above. In Hong Kong, the degree of automation has been enhanced by allowing drivers to remotely control and park their vehicles since March 2025. The government has been conducting pilot schemes for fully autonomous cars in North Lantau and the West Kowloon Cultural District. For instance, driverless buses are used at Hong Kong International Airport to pick up and drop off airport staff.
