【明报专讯】A major Mainland technology company has recently launched a new product: AI Smart Glasses. The glasses feature a camera and audio system that support video recording and voice control. Additionally, the company states that the glasses can facilitate QR code-based payments by simply looking at a QR code to scan and pay.

Pat: What a fashionable electronic gadget! I can understand why they were immediately sold out.

MO MO: I would not buy such smart glasses due to privacy concerns. Imagine if a hacker gains access to every single moment of your life; it could be dangerous...

Bill: You are right! Aside from security concerns, smart glasses can distract users from their surroundings, posing risks when used while driving, walking, or engaging in other activities that require full attention.

Dr Panda: Both of you have valid points. However, the invention of smart glasses could be beneficial to some disabled persons. A local company has been developing glasses for the hearing impaired. These glasses can convert speech into text in real-time and project it onto the lenses, allowing the hearing-impaired individuals wearing the glasses to ''see'' what others are saying, thereby overcoming communication barriers between them and others. ●

What is a wearable computer?

A wearable computer is a type of technology that you can wear on your body, like a smart watch or smart glasses.

A smart watch is like a small computer that you wear on your wrist like a regular watch. On the other hand, smart glasses are glasses with a special display that can show you information like a computer screen. They can help you see things in a new way and display messages or directions right in front of your eyes. Wearable computers are handy gadgets that you can wear to make everyday tasks easier and more convenient, whether on your wrist or on your face.

Short-sightedness (近视)

If you are short-sighted, you can see things up close clearly but struggle to see things in the distance. This happens when the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the eye's outer layer) is too curved. People with myopia may need concave glasses to see distant objects clearly.

Similarly, if you are long-sighted, you can see distant objects clearly but may have trouble focusing on close-up objects. It occurs when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat. People with long-sightedness might need convex glasses for reading or other close-up tasks.
